There are three main types of watercolour paper available, hot press, not and rough. I suggest you use the middle range, ‘NOT’, which can be bought at any art suppliers in spiral bound pads containing around 12 sheets of 140lb (300gsm) plus ideally, a sketcher’s watercolour pocket box, containing about 12 pans with ideally a thumb ring for ease of use when painting outside. You will also need at least three brushes, preferably sizes 12, 8 and 4 and a waterproof ink pen with my preferred pen being a Pilot DR Drawing Pen in 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 tips.
