Composition and observation
We will meet at a pre arranged location. On the first day we will familiarise ourselves with our materials, different brushes, paper and paints. How to look at seascapes/ landscapes and respond to what we see in front of us. Firstly using charcoal or pencil and then, with the minimal amount of colours, we will learn about the layering of washes and paint a simple seascape/ landscape. How to get used to handing paint.
At our pre arranged location we will look at tonal values to add depth to a painting and how to pick out warm and cool colours. How to mix colours and the techniques of a graded and variegated wash using water colour as well as dropped in colour and the lifting out of colour. These ideas we will include in our painting of the day.
At our location you will be introduced to a range of mixed media and how to incorporate these into your paintings for exciting effects. Using wax resist, oil crayons, salt, pen, charcoal with wash. You will be able to experiment and bring drama/variation into your work with the mixing of different types of paints/materials.
The last day will be about incorporating and combining all the techniques you have learnt and painting for fun in our beautiful surroundings. We will finish with a resume of our work and a look at each others paintings.
Instruction and help will be given throughout and everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace and in a way that they feel most comfortable.
The focus of the painting courses on offer is to capture the essence of Cornwall’s wonderful coastline with its rugged wildness and how to respond to this dramatic scenery in a painterly way. Painting on location and in the open air you will be shown a variety of techniques with a range of paint media. Learn new approaches to working with charcoal and wash, watercolour and resist, the mixing of different types of paint.
